To use FieldEx effectively as a Planner, it’s essential to understand the key system terms and how they relate to your daily workflows. This article explains the core building blocks of the FieldEx platform, with practical examples of how they connect.

This guide covers:

  • What a Job is in FieldEx

  • What an Asset is, and how it fits into service operations

  • The role of Sites and Customers in location tracking

  • How Technicians are scheduled and assigned to tasks

Jobs in FieldEx

In FieldEx, a Job represents any field activity such as installation, repair, inspection, or maintenance. Jobs are the central unit of work assigned to technicians and tracked throughout their lifecycle from creation to completion and reporting.

  • Each job includes checklists, required spare parts, site and asset links, and expected outcomes.

  • Jobs may be created manually or from templates for recurring activities.

  • Technicians receive assigned jobs through the mobile app and complete all required steps onsite.

Tip: In FieldEx, the terms Job and Work Order refer to the same thing. You do not need to treat them differently in your planning or reports.

Assets

Assets are the core items being serviced, tracked, or maintained in FieldEx. These can include:

  • Equipment (e.g. generators, lifts, HVAC units)

  • Vehicles or tools assigned to field crews

  • Customer-owned machinery under a service contract

Each asset has its own:

  • Unique ID and name

  • Status and location

  • Movement and maintenance history

  • QR code or barcode label

Tip: Always link jobs to one or more assets to ensure full service tracking and performance reporting.

Sites and Customers

Sites represent physical locations where jobs take place or assets are located. Customers are the companies or individuals who own the equipment or request the service.

Term

Purpose

Customer

The business or person associated with the job and/or asset.

Site

The physical location where the asset is deployed or where the job occurs.

Each site can be linked to one customer, and each customer can have many sites. You can also have sub-customers who own the asset, while the asset is placed at a main customer’s site.

Technicians

Technicians are field users who receive, perform, and complete jobs via the FieldEx mobile app. Their role includes:

  • Reviewing assigned jobs and completing tasks

  • Submitting checklists, photos, signatures, and notes

  • Updating job status in real time

As a Planner, you’ll assign jobs to technicians based on skillset, availability, location, or team.

Why it matters: Assigning the right technician ensures faster turnaround, better service quality, and accurate record keeping.
