Some equipment isn’t used on its own it’s made up of multiple components. In FieldEx, you can reflect these relationships by linking assets as Parent and Child. This helps you track how items are grouped together in the field, and how maintenance or status changes should flow between them.
This article explains how to create, view, and manage parent-child asset structures.
What is a Parent-Child Relationship?
In FieldEx:
A Parent Asset is the main equipment or unit (e.g., a generator set)
A Child Asset is any component linked to the parent (e.g., battery, engine, controller)
This structure is used when:
Multiple tracked items form a single operational unit
You want to track components separately (e.g., for service, replacement)
Condition or status changes should affect all linked parts
How to Link Assets as Parent and Child
Steps:
Create or open the child asset (the component)
In the Hierarchy and Classification section, select the Parent
Use the asset name search to find and assign the main unit
Click Save
The system filters the list to show only valid parent assets—not other accessories.
Once saved:
The child asset shows the name of the parent
The parent asset will display a summary section listing all linked child assets
Status Propagation
If you update the status of a parent asset (e.g., from “In Use” to “Under Repair”), you’ll see an option to:
✅ “Also update component statuses”
This lets you apply the same change to all children automatically ensuring consistency across the full equipment setup.
Where You’ll See Linked Assets
View | What’s Displayed |
Parent Asset Profile | A summary list of all linked child assets |
Child Asset Profile | The name and link to its assigned parent |
Job Orders | Option to show the full parent-structure if needed |
Transfers | You can move components individually or together |
Summary
Term | Description | Example |
Parent Asset | The main equipment or host unit | “Diesel Generator – 30kVA” |
Child Asset | A tracked component or accessory | “Battery – 12V”, “Control Panel” |
Why it matters | Enables component tracking, replacement, and bulk updates | Replace a single part or change status across the whole system |
Parent-child linking helps you track complex equipment structures while keeping each part individually visible, replaceable, and auditable in FieldEx.
